Welcome to the 5th Minnesota Cinema!

"Living History" This is a fun, upbeat "Web Commercial" about what living history is, and what we do as the 5th Minnesota. Anyway, it's all in fun so enjoy and maybe..just maybe, you might learn something.

"Recruitment" This little bit takes us back to a time of the old newsreels! See the bold, the brave, and the unfocused! A simple but fun little recruitment clip. Enjoy!

" Remember When?" This recruitment clip is another one with a serious lean, dealing with the shared experience and memory of our members. We examine how such experiences bring us together, and make us more than simply people sharing a hobby. Who wouldn't want in on that!
"Timed Fire Exercise" A well trained soldier during the Civil War was said to be able to fire three aimed shots in one minute. Filmed at Fort Ridgely, Minnesota on July 1st 2007-see the 5th Minnesota Volunteer Regiment prove that such a feat is not only possible, but can even be improved upon!

"Putting up a Sibley Tent" Alright, so I was in the mood to be a little goofy! The boys of the 5th Minnesota had a chance (first time) to put up a Sibley Tent-and quickly found out why the Federal Army abandoned them so early in the Civil War. Now, take all that and throw in tin piano and you have the clip you are about to enjoy.

"Woodland Skirmish" Alright..the title sounds better than this is. I'll be honest...this clip exists ONLY because of the really fantastic discharges visible upon firing. Sad, yes...but it's just SO COOL!

"The Shepherd in Training" And now, the joys of sheep. Sheep that won't hold still, listen to reason or even heed a sensible suggestion. Yes, all that AND one stalwart little civilian boy who refuses to surrender!

"Civil War Soldier Camp, 2007" Well, our 3rd year of doing the Civil War Soldiers Camp for the Three Rivers Parks District at Murphy's Landing has concluded-and what a great camp it was! The young folks did fantastic, and as usual proved the amazing ability of these kids to learn to become Federal soldiers. This is done is a silent movie style (I happen to like this genre, as you all probably have noticed).

"The Birth of a Jonah, Part 1"A series of fun silent movies, this first one is a "civil war era public service announcement" reminding soldiers to practice and pay attention in drill. A "Jonah" was the civil war name for a "klutz"-that guy who tries so hard and yet still ends up a day late and a dollar short. Enjoy.

"The sound of Exhaustion" Short (thank God!) clip extolling the amazing results of the "road trip". For those of you who have followed the sometimes (many would say often) crazed motivations of the living history hobby, you will no doubt harken back to your own memories of the strange, but bond building things that happen when driving a LONG WAY for an event. Anyway, here's one of ours....(HUGE apologies to Rogers and Hammerstein).

"MORE Memorial Day News Coverage" Yet another lovely bit of coverage of the Memorial Day event at Murphy's Landing, this time from WCCO (CBS) Channel 4 (Minneapolis/St. Paul).

"STILL MORE Memorial Day Coverage" A portion of Memorial Day coverage with KMSP (FOX) Channel 9 (Minneapolis/St. Paul).

"A Montage of the Boscobel Event, 2007" A few of us from the 5th Minnesota made our way a little East and wound up at the 2007 Boscobel event. This sequence, a combination of a little video and photo's taken during the event, doesn't do the place justice-but it's worth seeing anyway. Enjoy.

"The Birth of a Jonah, Part 2: Army Discipline" In this second installment of the popular (well, in OUR minds anyway) series, we see the "Jonah" come face to face with the unmovable intensity of "Army Discipline". Well, really it's a little fable about why it's unwise to refuse a sergeant to his face. Very unwise.

"Lions in Blue" Hurrah! Three cheers! Behold the majesty of the fine art of propaganda newsreel in this clip known as "Holding Fast". "Their muskets are loaded with the bullets of Freedom..."...need we say more?

"Labor Day 2007" A little smattering of the military activities presented during the Labor Day weekend at Murphy's Landing (a living history village in Shakopee, Minnesota).

"The Battle of Fort Donelson" A local news service in Mason City, Iowa presents this lovely clip of the action at the annual Mason City Civil War event, August 2007. Watch for the Union infantry...that be Us.

"Wild Weather at Mason City Event" The same local news service as above captures the reason why the Mason City event finished up early in 2007. This became one of those events where those that were tapped into their primal instincts were validated for leaving early!

"Dakota City, 2007" A short sequence of just a little of what the 5th Minnesota did at our Dakota City event this year in Farmington, Minnesota. Here you will see some camp cooking, musicians practicing whilst the Artillery does their best to accompany their tune with a cannon blast, and even the punishment by "Heavy Pack" of one Private "Smokehouse" Johnson. Enjoy!

"Execution for Desertion" The penalty for desertion during the American Civil War (if one was caught and the Officer involved had no sense of humor) was death. Cheery, eh? While at the Dakota City event September 15th-16th of 2007, the 5th Minnesota chose to do a demonstration through the day of "Military Punishments" typical of our period. Not that many of them happened often, but things that were none-the-less available to those wishing to offer corrective action towards naughty volunteer soldiers. Private Honan does a superb job here as our condemned, as do all the supporting cast. Note especially the brief handshake between the condemned and one of those soldiers in his firing detail. Good stuff. While not gory, this is stark and might be disturbing to some.

"Skirmishing" Here we see the 5th Minnesota practicing skirmish drill, both forward and in retreat. Shown both from a distance and amongst the soldiers. Skirmishing is a method of deploying a group of soldiers to probe for the enemy lines, slow the advance of an enemy, or simply to harass an enemies lines prior to the main attack.

"Winter Furlough, December 2007" After two years, the boys from the 5th Minnesota are given furlough-and do they make the most of it! Here you can see some of activities from the event set during the Folkways of the Holidays event at Murphy's Landing, in Shakopee Minnesota. Cooking "slum", a visit from the Christian Commission, firing by the drum, and visiting old chums from the regiment in their homes during the Christmas season are just a few of the sites you'll see here!

"Winter Furlough, December 2007-Firing Demonstrations" Here we see three examples of methods used to fire muskets during the Civil War. There is Fire by Drum (Where the drummers beat tells the soldiers when to come to the ready, aim, fire, and recover); Fire by Company (Where everyone fires together by verbal command); and Fire by Files (where each man [but normally a pair] fires in turn down the line by verbal command. For this event, we loaded blanks that were closer to the amount of powder used in live loads. The difference is quite obvious in the report of the muskets!

"The Monkey" One of those moments when caught on video, you scratch your head and ponder--"Do I show this, or pretend it never happened?". This grew out of a company joke command regarding a special bugle call known as "The Monkey". When sounded, our men were required to perform a unique detail. Confused? Watch, and all will become clear...sadly.
